Welcome to one of the least exciting parts of buying a powersports vehicle.
At Jaguar Power Sports, we deal with this stuff every day. We have decades of combined experience working with vehicle titles and registrations, and we've learned something very simple:
Getting the paperwork right the first time is a whole lot easier than fixing it later.
That's why we offer our MSO & Titling Service for just $95 per vehicle.
For most customers purchasing an eligible vehicle, we recommend adding it.
First: What Is an MSO?
MSO stands for Manufacturer's Statement of Origin. You may also hear the term MCO — Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin.
Think of it as the vehicle's original ownership document from the manufacturer.
For a new vehicle that has never previously been titled, the MSO/MCO is commonly one of the documents used to establish ownership when applying for the vehicle's first title.
It normally contains important identifying information about the vehicle and manufacturer, including the VIN.
But here's the important part: an MSO is NOT the same thing as a state-issued title.
A title is issued through the appropriate state motor vehicle agency. The MSO/MCO is documentation that may be used as part of that process.
Why Does This Matter With Powersports Vehicles?
Powersports isn't quite as simple as buying a new car.
We sell motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, dirt bikes, go-karts, UTVs and many other types of vehicles. Depending on the machine and where you live, the rules can be very different.
Some vehicles can be titled and registered for road use.
Some can be titled but not registered for street use.
Some are classified as off-highway vehicles.
And some vehicles simply aren't eligible for a street title or registration.
Your state's rules ultimately determine what can be titled and registered and what documentation is required.
That's why you shouldn't assume that having an MSO automatically means you can walk into your DMV and get a license plate.
The DMV Doesn't Care That "The Dealer Said It Would Be Fine"
This is where customers can get frustrated.
You walk into the DMV expecting a five-minute transaction.
Then:
"You're missing a document."
"The VIN isn't in our system."
"We need additional manufacturer information."
"This needs another signature."
"This vehicle is classified differently in our state."
"Come back when you have..."

And maybe you're making phone calls from the DMV parking lot trying to figure out what they're asking for.

Florida Is a Great Example
Here in Florida, the state's own procedures demonstrate how important the manufacturer's documentation can be.
For example, Florida's procedures state that the proof of ownership for a new off-highway vehicle or recreational off-highway vehicle is the MCO.
Florida has also specifically advised customers attempting to title certain motorcycles that they may need to obtain a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin before the vehicle can be titled or registered.
So these aren't meaningless pieces of paper.
They matter.
And when something is wrong or missing, it can stop a title application in its tracks.

"Can't I Just Do It Myself?"

And we aren't going to pretend otherwise.
If the transaction allows the customer to handle the title application directly, you're certainly capable of taking your paperwork to the appropriate agency and completing the process yourself.

For some people, absolutely.

Buying From Outside Florida? This Is Especially Important.
Jaguar Power Sports is located in Jacksonville, Florida, but we sell and ship vehicles nationwide.
That means we regularly work with customers who live outside Florida.
And here's where things become important:
Titling and registration requirements are controlled by the individual states.
There is no single nationwide DMV process.
Your state may handle your vehicle differently than Florida does. Documentation requirements, vehicle classifications, inspections, taxes, fees and registration eligibility can differ.
Our team has extensive experience working with customers purchasing vehicles from outside Florida and can help make the process substantially easier.
What If I Want to Make My Vehicle Street Legal?
Please talk to us before you buy if street registration is important to you.
This is extremely important.
Having an MSO or even obtaining a title does not automatically mean a vehicle can legally be registered for public-road use in your state.
Different vehicles are manufactured and certified for different purposes, and every state has its own rules.

What About ATVs, UTVs and Off-Road Vehicles?
This is another area where customers sometimes confuse title with street registration.
An ATV or other off-highway vehicle may have an ownership document and may even receive a state title without becoming legal for unrestricted use on public roads.
Those are separate issues.
Your ability to operate a particular vehicle on public streets depends on the vehicle and the laws where you intend to operate it.
Never assume "it has an MSO" means "I can get a tag."
